Believe it or not, Montreal’s island landscape includes the St. Lawrence River and the Lachine Canal (rapids – great for white water rafting) which creates the famous standing wave. Habitat 67 is not only a housing complex and landmark designed by famed architect Moshe Safdie, it is also known to water-sports enthusiasts as the Standing Wave.
The wave is created by as fast-moving water hits underwater boulders, creating a wave that can reach as high as two metres. The Lachine Rapids features other two-metre breaks, including a wave further upriver near Lachine, known locally as Big Joe.
