Excerpt from the Official Jazz Fest Montreal:

Last year it was the unforgettable Stevie Wonder event… this year, the Festival hits another homerun, with another artist whom organizers have dreamt of presenting since the very beginning of the Festival: Lionel Richie!

The king of the slow-dance classics (Say You, Say MeEndless Love…), a human jukebox of dance hits (All Night Long), a prolific lyricist and composer (Lady for Kenny Rogers, We Are the World for… the world) and, of course, the singer and soul of the legendary Commodores—THE Motown stars of the ’70s—Richie has led an extraordinary and exemplary career and left his indelible mark upon American music, gold-plating four decades of our musical culture with hits we’ve all hummed, whistled—or sung at the top of our lungs!

On the other side of this incredible evening, welcome back Cassandra Wilson, a dear friend of the Festival—recipient of our Miles-Davis Award in 1999—who never fails to bewitch us with her deep, velvety, sensual voice and a blues sensibility that is perfectly at home on the legendary Blue Note label. A Special Event filled with musical thrills!

them-crooked-vultures

Rock Supergroup Them Crooked Vultures are in concert tonight in Montreal at Metropolis, Wednesday May 12th 2010. While the show was originally slated to be at the CEPSUM Arena, Metropolis is the new venue. The band, formed in Los Angeles in 2009 features John Paul Jones, Dave Grohl and Josh Homme.

Dave Grohl was the drummer for Nirvana, later formed the Foo Fighters and has worked with Queens of the Stone Age and his heavy metal side project Probot, and has performed session work for a variety of musicians, including Killing Joke, Tenacious D, Nine Inch Nails, The Prodigy and Slash.

Josh Homme was a founding member of the stoner metal band Kyuss, as well as the founding and only continuous member of the hard rock band Queens of the Stone Age (QOTSA), in which he mainly sings and plays guitar. In 2010, Homme publicly stated he will concentrate his efforts on Them Crooked Vultures over all other projects.

Best known as the bassist, mandolinist, and keyboardist for English rock band Led Zeppelin, Jean Paul Jones has since developed a solo career and has gained even more respect as both a musician and a producer. He plays the bass, piano and other instruments.

The supergroup released their first single “New Fang”, and their debut, self-titled album on 17 November 2009.

The show is sold out and will definitely attract a serious groupie following tonight!

Live Shows: RJD2, Muse, Julian Casablancas & Bon Jovi

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

If you are looking for musical acts in Montreal over the next couple weeks, be sure to check out the following shows, starting with tonite!

rjd2

RJD2 is playing at La Tulipe tonite. Originally from Ohio and now out of Philadelphia, Rjd2’s music is a collage of cut-and-paste hip-hop that combines disparate elements to make for soulful, moody portraits of the world.

In the spring of 2001, he made his first formal appearance as a solo artist on the Def Jux Presents… compilation, proving he could hold his own alongside such luminaries as Company Flow, El-P, Cannibal Ox, and Aesop Rock.

Rjd2’s debut album, Dead Ringer, followed on Def Jux in 2002. One of the best underground hip-hop releases of the year, it melded dirty samples and a classic approach to song structure for an end result that gave DJ Shadow, DJ Spooky, and Moby a run for their money.

RJD2’s new full length The Colossus was released on January 19, 2010 on his own label.

Muse will be in concert tonite at the Bell Centre, home of the Montreal Canadiens.

Muse’s fusion of progressive rock, glam, electronica, and Radiohead-influenced experimentation is crafted by guitarist/vocalist Matthew Bellamy, bassist Chris Wolstenholme, and drummer Dominic Howard.

Muse has toured Europe, America, Australia, and Southeast Asia in support of the album, and their dynamic stage performance (which won the band multiple awards for Best Live Act, including accolades from the NME Awards, the Q Awards, and the Vodafone Live Music Awards) was captured on 2008’s H.A.A.R.P. Live from Wembley. The trio spent the remainder of that year — as well as the early part of 2009 — in the recording studio, eventually emerging with the release of The Resistance in September.

Julian Casablancas, the famed singer of The Strokes, will be in coming to Montreal April 1st at The National in an effort to continue to promote his first solo album Phrazes for the Young. Casablancas has won over critics as the lead singer of one the most influential rock bands since 2000.

His solo effort has garnered much praise for it’s single 11th Dimension. Pitchfork magazine rated 11th Dimension the 66 best song of 2009 stating “‘11th Dimension’ is the strongest he’s (Julian’s) sounded since Room on Fire. It’s a blast of retro-futuristic synths, steam-rolling guitar licks, and slicing, dicing hi-hat, and the busy pulse of the production cuts through the detachment and manages to convey a sense of fun, as if he’s finally enjoying the creative experience”.

And yes, Bon Jovi is once again returning to Montreal for a two shows at the Bell Centre on March 19th-20th.

Montreal Nitelife Travel will not only be in attendance with their clients, they will be PARTYING all night long!

What’s actually pretty cool at the Place Des Festivals is the gallery of sketches and drawings of legendary poet, novelist, singer, songwriter Leonard Cohen. Cohen, a Montreal native, only began publicly showing his artwork in 2007. And luckily it will be on display all the way to May 9th 2010.
