The Sparrow resto-bar in Mile End

Wednesday, March 17th, 2010

sparrow_fb

With a culinary background including some Gordon Ramsay love & Montreal’s number one ranked restaurant on TripAdvisor, co-owner Marc Cohen (chef) teamed up with co-owner Ethan Wills (manager) to mesh the gastro-pub Brit flavors with NYC restauranteur flair.

From brunch to 3 am, Sparrow is a busy spot in a famed locale (previously home to Mile End Bar) with multiple floors and a warm “Canadian” decor.

We dig it, especially the snack food during bar hours.

Home to local scenesters but definitely the “I’m not trying” crowd. Great spot to eat + drink without the hoopla further down St-Laurent Boulevard.

Located at 5322 Blvd St-Laurent in the Mile End district.

Bar hours: 5pm to 3am - Tuesday to Friday, 6pm to 3am - Saturday and Sunday
Restaurant hours: Lunch: 12pm to 3pm - Wednesday to Friday
Brunch hours: 10am to 3pm - Saturday and Sunday
Snack menu hours: 6pm to 11pm - Tuesday to Saturday

Do the pigs knuckles or the mussels, which will require a pint or two.

Unpretentious yet classy, Taverne Dominion offers an A-1 take on brasserie food while giving you all the required ingredients for a true tavern experience.

Located at 1243 Metcalfe in downtown Montreal.

Montreal Weekend Highlights #3

Monday, March 15th, 2010

Here we go again!

Montreal Nightlife VIP Agent #1:

“It’s always fun when you get a large Bachelor Party group flying in from Chicago. Two limousines picked up the 12 guys on Thursday afternoon. That night they wanted a little tour guide of Montreal’s downtown, so I hopped in one limo with the Bachelor and the group organizer and showed them around Crescent, Ste-Catherine and Mount-Royal’s lookout. Friday night, they had reservations at Med Bar + Grill for dinner. After dinner they took a limousine up St-Laurent to Solid Gold, and made it back for their bottle reservations (8 in total) at Med for 1 am!

Saturday they wanted to experience some Pubs during the later afternoon. I then met up with them for some entertainment back at the Bachelor Party Headquarters. Limousines picked us up, and brought us to Moomba Supperclub where dinner and 9 bottles of premium liquor were chilling on ice for my Chi-town guys.”

Montreal Nightlife VIP Agent #2:

“I had 5 groups in town, three from Canada (TO, Ottawa & Winnipeg) and another two from North-East US. Friday night, I pretty much went all over downtown catching up with my guests. I hit up Light Ultraclub for VIP guestlist, same at Seven Nightclub, Tonic Club Lounge  and then I checked the biggest group of 9 partygoers who were loving the dance-offs at La Boom!

Saturday, I had two groups come in for one night party weekends with hotel. I met up with the girls Bachelorette Party group at Hotel St-Paul, took them to Garde Manger for dinner and then lots of shooters at Santos Lounge. My other group was on St-Laurent Blvd, having dinner at Buona Notte and bouncing around at the bar/lounges on the Main, including Rouge and Gogo’s. They really wanted to eat Montreal poutine at 3 am… so I brought them to La Banquise … heaven in a bowl!

Montreal Nightlife VIP Agent #3:

“Well, we had a group of hockey people in town for one of the scouts’ Bachelor Party. Friday night, we took them to watch the Montreal Juniors take on the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies at the Verdun Auditorium. Beer was definitely flowing, and once the game ended, we first hit up Burgundy Lion for some single-malts and then over to Chez Parée. Saturday, they went go-karting in the middle-afternoon, set them up for an early dinner at M:BRGR and then to the Bell Centre where the Habs beat the Bruins 3-2 in front of a sellout crowd. After the game, we bar-hopped near the Bell-Centre at Ye Olde Orchard, Hurley’s, Brutopia and just as I thought we were done for the night, we then went to Stogies for some cigars. Great group, great stories and great times at MNT.”

Mtl Nitelife CEO featured in B&G Canada! Pt 2

Friday, March 12th, 2010

Montreal Nitelife Travel’s CEO Angelo D’Ambra was interviewed and featured in Bride & Groom Canada. After ten years in the business, D’Ambra has seen it all and spoke about his experiences with writer Jennifer Cox. Checkout an excerpt from the article in Bride & Groom Canada! Here’s Part 2:

For Him:

Where should the guys take the groom for a night of good, clean fun (mostly)? Where else – Montreal! D’Ambra let us in on one of the biggest shindigs he’s planned for the boys. “We organized a bachelor party that was memorable because of the sheer size – it was a group of grad students from an Ivy League school in the States. There were 14 bachelor parties in one with a total of 54 people on one bus for a one-night affair in Montreal,” he says. “We booked an entire restaurant and then a strip club for them, they went to the casino, it ended at six in the morning, and they drove back.”

Dinner at a cool restaurant like Milsa and then bar-hopping on St. Laurent or Crescent is the tried-and-true guys’ night out, but grooms and groomsmen are more willing to think (way) outside the box. “Some guys are really into extreme sports – they like combat, so there are combat-karate classes. Skydiving is also something completely out-of-the-ordinary and it’s sort of a rite of passage,” D’Ambra says. “You can also go white-water rafting. And then there are gun ranges and skeet shooting.”
